Visiting the Clinic
Learn the essentials of dental care.
When you have a toothache, or it is time for your regular check-up, you make an appointment to see the dentist.
First, a dental hygienist will clean your teeth. They carefully remove sticky plaque and hard tartar. They will remind you to brush twice a day and use floss to protect your hard outer enamel and keep your pink gums healthy and strong.
Sometimes, the dentist needs to take an X-ray to see the hidden roots inside your mouth. If they find a small hole called a cavity, they will need to clean the decay and put in a filling. If a tooth is too damaged to save, it might require a complete extraction.
If your teeth are crooked and need to be straightened, you might need to wear braces. After your visit is over, the dentist might give you a prescription for medicine to pick up at the pharmacy.
